Lotusphere 2009 FlashMob Consultations

November 20th, 2008

Come join us in doing something fun and alternative.  We are leading flashmobs loosely organized on collaboration and development of Lotus Software solutions.  This is your chance to get Consultative Brainstorming with the experts. It’s a geeky discussion for the developers who need direction with Lotus Software.

Look for more information to pop-up all over the place.

Lab 04 – Lotus Sameime SDKs

This lab will demonstrate how to leverage the full capabilities of three Sametime SDKs by building a comprehensive server application and client plug-in. Specifically, the lab will
1) Demonstrate how to build a server side application to publish a new custom status icon to the client
2) Demonstrate how to distribute a new Sametime Connect plug-in using an eclipse update site
3) Demonstrate how to build a custom Sametime Connect plug-in that listens for custom status changes

The server application will use the Community Server Toolkit and the TelephonyAdapterService interface that was released in Sametime 8.0 to publish an additional customizable status icon to the Sametime client. The client side plug-in will demonstrate how to combine the power of both the Sametime Connect and Java Toolkit APIs to listen for attribute changes to the custom status and take additional actions.

Lab 03 – Leverage Lotus Symphony in your business solutions

This two part lab will introduce you to Symphony, explain how to extend Lotus Symphony with Eclipse plug-in development and deployment, teach the default actions of Symphony (i.e. load a document, save document, insert text, etc.), and show you how to customize Symphony to support more actions and properties with the Symphony Java API and Expeditor PropertyBroker. You will learn by developing a basic Eclipse plug-in that runs on Symphony and then build on your knowledge to develop a composite application that emulates a sales performance management dashboard. After this lab, you will see how Symphony is not just about office productivity tools like word processing, spreadsheet or presentation; it’s about customization and integration of Lotus Symphony to your solutions.

There is a bonus section devoted to Lotus Notes Developers who are interested in Leveraging Lotus Symphony via the LotusScript Toolkit.

This lab introduces the participant to the Lead Manager sample application for XPages. The tips and tricks of how to develop with XPages are highlighted, discussed and reviewed; focus is placed on how to make some simple improvements in a Notes Web Application. The participant finishes with a general understanding of how to create an XPage front end to an existing Notes application. This lab will introduce you to the Lead Manager sample application for XPages. The tips and tricks of how it was developed are discussed and viewed and some simple improvements are made. The participant should finish with a general understanding of how to create an XPage front end to an existing Notes application.

Breakout Technology Award – NEW in 2009!

October 21st, 2008

Breakout Technology Award – NEW in 2009!

This Award will be presented to an IBM Business Partner who offers a solution that extends the software user experience by leveraging new technology innovations introduced into the IBM Lotus® and IBM WebSphere® Portal portfolio. These technologies must be new since Lotusphere® 2008, such as XPages, Live Text, Composite Application integration with the Sidebar, and the Portal Web 2.0 client. They provide IBM Business Partners and customers with the capability to integrate and blend heterogeneous applications and data in the context of the end user’s role, transforming solutions into a single seamless work environment that boosts end user and organizational effectiveness. Submissions for this Award should be solutions that leverage these new technologies to extend business application functionality based on contexts defined by end consumer requirements. Entries will be judged based on the overall business value they demonstrate, the extent to which these solutions leverage the technologies, and the ability to demonstrate how these enhancements boost end user and organizational effectiveness.

Today I will start running you through the 10 labs and what the descriptions are for each of them.

IBM Lotus Notes: Utilize the Sidebar and Live Text in a Composite Application

The integration between the Lotus Notes sidebar and composite applications has been improved. The Composite Application Editor (CAE) can be used to populate the sidebar and wire them to components. Live Text integration has been improved, and in addition to My Widgets can now be used with composite applications and wired to component actions.

Using the Lead Manager composite application sample as a starting point, you can select different labs to learn about these new features. First, you will move a component from the Lead Manager to the sidebar making it available on all pages. Second, leverage Live Text to replace a wire and associate the component’s action with a content type. This will allow a user to initiate the action from the Live Text right mouse menu.

Leaders meeting

October 9th, 2008

So today we discussed room layouts and sizes of the room and what we are going to put where.

We also found this awesome stuff called 3M Vikuiti film that you can put on glass and project onto the back of it. We are going to try and find out if there are cheaper alternatives and if we can get some applied to the plexi-glass wall we are having as one side of the room. Then we can project information onto it and attract you all into the lab.

The plexi-glass wall idea is so that you can all see into the room and see that we are not a store room. Lots of people last year thought we were just somewhere for the partners to store their stuff during the show.

Also there is hot debate about where our room banner should be placed. Last year it must have been attached to the ceiling by someone who has no idea about ascetics, marketing or general exhibition infrastructure. The guy who put it up must have thought that paying a lot of money for a sign for four days meant that not being able to see it was a good thing. We are going to be very explicit this year about where it goes.

So off to the full lab staff meeting tomorrow with more information for the troops.

I can hear the elves working away in the back there

October 2nd, 2008

I really can hear them hammering their bit of our lab into shape. They have all downloaded the VMware image that we created and are busy making it work for them.

One of the Notes guys is saying that he wants to use Gold code for his lab and it may make him miss the deadline we have set for his lab to be in. So we have cut him some slack and will make him load it onto his machines himself if he misses the extended deadline. ;o)

It sounds as though the crafting of the Quickr labs is in full swing as we had a virtual memory question come through just yesterday. That solved, work continues apace.

Staffing for the labs was discussed today and we have been making sure that we have the right number of people to cope with the crowds this year. Some of our lab rats are also elevated to the lofty heights of speaker for a few hours during the week. But don’t worry, we’ll be sure to bring back down to earth to make sure they are there to answer your questions for you.

Right back in the mines to look for more nuggets of wisdom we can share.

Cheif Elf, twice removed (for bad behaviour) ;o)

New content coming

September 26th, 2008

I have opened this blog up to the authors of the labs so that they can tell you what’s going on in their little bit of the lab.

Please interact with them and use this space as a place to understand more of what goes on to get this stuff ready for you and to ask questions. I would also recommend that you keep telling us what you want to see in each lab area.

Don’t forget to keep checking the DeveloperWorks site for more information as it becomes public about each lab.

Minimal Windows XP install, part 2

September 26th, 2008

WOW, what a task this morning. To get as small as I can a VMware image of Microsoft XP so that people can download it without too much trouble.
I started by downloading the image from the USA ftp server. 7.67Gb in 1Gb .rar files.
I then expanded this out and it was a total of 13.6Gb when totally expanded. I then ran the tools recommended here. (I had to dig around for the vOptimizer, but found it on cNet’s website)
I managed to get the uncompressed VMware image down to 3.71Gb, which I was very happy with. Half the size of the original, almost.
Then I created a .rar file in 1Gb chucks so that people could download it easily. This turned out to be a stunning 1.4Gb in size.
So all in all a good mornings work. 6.27Gb saving on network traffic. Multiply that by the number of people to download it, 12-15 and that’s a monster saving of just under 95Gb
